Woodland Pop Up

A woodland-themed pop-up with four different ways to make the characters appear. Toddlers from twelve months turn the flower, push the button and work the other mechanisms to pop up each character, then push them down again to repeat. The forest creatures, such as the hedgehog and caterpillar, give adults plenty to name and talk about, while matching colours between characters and bases supports colour recognition. At home it plays in the living room; in a nursery or classroom it is made for group play.

How to play and learn

Written by Tolo for parents and early-years staff: what to do with the toy, and what the child is learning while doing it.

12 MONTHS +
1Give your child the toy when all the characters are pushed down in their bases.
2Let your baby explore the toy and see if they can discover what happens.
3If necessary, give your child some guidance and show how to move the shapes to make the characters pop up.
4Show your baby how to push them down again. Introduce and use the correct vocabulary such as "turn the flower", "push down on the Orange button".
5Demonstrate your actions to go with your words but do not be concerned if your toddler doesn't understand just yet.
6Repetition and reinforcement over time will help increase their skills.
7Emphasise colour recognition by talking about the different colours and the relationships between the Acorn and the Oak tree leaf for example.
8"What colour is the Caterpillar in the Orange egg?". Challenge your toddler to pop the characters up in the order of your choosing.
9For instance "can you pop the baby Hedgehog up?". Use lots of praise and encouraging language.
