Quad with Boy

A pull-back Quad Bike with a First Friends Farm Boy at the wheel. Pull it back, release and it speeds across the floor, or push it along by hand. The farmer lifts out and sits back in, has a squeaking tummy and clicking head, arms and legs, and his hat turns for different looks. Children chase, retrieve and race it, adding engine sounds and farm stories. At home it plays in the living room; in a nursery or classroom it is made for group play.

How to play and learn

Written by Tolo for parents and early-years staff: what to do with the toy, and what the child is learning while doing it.

1–5 YEARS
1Introduce your child to the First Friends driver and his quad bike - encourage independent exploration but if necessary demonstrate the character's moving, clicking parts and show your tot how the driver fits into his quad bike.
2Show your baby that the toy moves and encourage your child to push it along the ground and crawl after it.
3Show your baby how to pull back the vehicle and watch it race across the floor. Encourage movement to retrieve it.
4Imitate the sounds a quad bike might make and praise your baby for any effort made to join in.
18 MONTHS +
5Show your child how to place the driver in the quad bike.
6Encourage them to do it by themselves and to either push the toy along the floor, or pull back to make it spring into action.
7Encourage your toddler to chase after it.
8Imitate the sound effects of a quad bike and encourage your baby to do the same - ‘brum brum, beep beep’
9Talk with your older child about the quad bike - What does it do? Where would you see one? Who might use one?
10Relate the toy to pictures or real quad bike and show your baby the similarities between the two.
11Talk about the appearance of the quad bike and its driver - e.g. what colour it is, how many wheels has it got?
12Introduce younger children to new language such as steering wheel, headlights, horn, etc.
13Encourage your child to use their imagination to play. Let your child take the lead but help with ideas if necessary.
14You may like to bring in other Tolo characters, vehicles and accessories to help your child create a colourful and imaginative world down on the farm or out on the African plains!
