Pterodactyl

First Friends Pterodactyl is a poseable flying dinosaur for children from one to five years. The child clicks its head and tail into position, moves its legs for perching or landing poses, and swoops it through the air above the other dinosaurs. Safe for teething, it is held and mouthed first, then becomes the flyer in every dinosaur story. At home it plays in the living room; in a nursery or classroom it is made for group play.

How to play and learn

Written by Tolo for parents and early-years staff: what to do with the toy, and what the child is learning while doing it.

1–5 YEARS
1Let your child explore the toy and find out which features move and make a sound - if necessary assist and show them all the moving, clicking parts.
2Ask your child simple questions such as 'can you make the head move?
3Show them pictures/photos of dinosaurs in books and encourage them to recognise the similar features of image and toy.
4Talk about the dinosaur in terms of size, colour, sounds they might have made and features like claws, wings, spines, tails etc.
5Encourage imaginative play in combination with other items from the First Friends collection.
18 MONTHS +
6Introduce vocabulary such as ‘sitting’ ‘running’ ‘roaring’ etc according to the different actions and sounds the dinosaurs can demonstrate as you play together.
7Talk about dinosaurs and explain that we don't see dinosaurs anymore but they once lived on earth before humans did!
8Talk about what the dinosaurs might have been like - share simple knowledge such as the T-Rex was very fierce, the Pterodactyl could fly and the Brontosaurus liked to eat leaves and trees.
9Ask your child if they have a favourite dinosaur and find out what they like about that one.
10Encourage your child to talk about the dinosaur's different features and abilities.
11Encourage lots of pretend play with the dinosaurs, letting your child take the lead, but assisting with ideas if necessary.
